WEST Program
Language Training
All CDS WEST participants will complete two terms of an intensive language course at Hunter College’s International English Language Institute (IELI) in Manhattan. Writing pre-tests will take place during WEST orientation in Seoul, and students will register for classes during the New York orientation, tentatively scheduled for March 30—March 31. Classes will take place April 4—May 27 and June 27—August 19
At IELI, WEST participants will be placed by level and integrated with other IELI students from all over the world in four to eight different core classes. Each IELI class will have a maximum of 22 students. Each week, the course will typically include 4½ hours of reading, 5½ hours of writing, 5 hours of listening and speaking, 5 hours of business English, and 5 hours of language lab based on current events. IELI is accredited by the ACCET.
IELI is an ideal setting to study English and begin exploring New York City. It is located in the historic Upper East Side neighborhood of Manhattan, steps from Central Park, Fifth Avenue shopping, and famous museums such as MoMA, the Met, and many more. CDS headquarters are just a short subway ride down Park Avenue. The Upper East Side is centrally located and convenient to public transportation.
IELI’s location on the main campus of Hunter College is an asset to CDS WEST participants, who will have the opportunity to interact with American college students on a daily basis and immerse themselves in American culture. The Hunter College library, cafeteria, and computer centers will be available to WEST participants during the language course.
WEST participants will be responsible for covering the cost of language materials, which will be approximately US$140 to US$250 per person.
